Yet more reasons why commercial publishing of academic works should give way to open access:
big publishing companies such as Macmillan, Wiley and Elsevier, which control the distribution of most of the world’s academic literature, by default do not allow text mining of the content that sits behind their expensive paywalls.
Commercial publishers don’t allow text mining of academic works, which prevents Big Data economy from taking advantage of modern mining techniques to connect research results faster and better. This despite the fact that computer analysis of large corpora of texts would have much potential for knowledge mining in various ways.
